Personal Vault is a protected folder within OneDrive that can only be accessed with a second step of identity verification. It gives you an added layer of protection for your most important files and photos like your passport, driver’s license, or insurance information, so you can access them from virtually anywhere.

Personal Vault works on your desktop, in the browser, and on a mobile device. Here's how to set it up on your mobile device:

Go to Protect your OneDrive files in Personal Vault to learn how to set it up on other devices.

  1. Download and install Microsoft OneDrive from the Google Play Store or the App Store.

  2. Open the OneDrive mobile app on your Android or iOS device, and sign in with your Microsoft account.

  3. Select Personal Vault under the Files tab.

  4. Select Continue.

  5. Verify your identity by entering your password. Then use text or email to get a verification code and enter it.

  6. Create a 6 digit PIN code and confirm it. If your mobile device has face recognition or a fingerprint reader, you will have the option to use that to unlock your Personal Vault.

After you've set up your Personal Vault, you can add photos, files and folders to it. See the articles below to learn how to use Personal Vault on different devices.

  • A Microsoft 365 subscription is required to add more than three files to your Personal Vault.

  • Personal Vault is available for OneDrive home and personal plans, not available in OneDrive for business, or work and school accounts. For more information, see plans here.
