Use a screen reader to work with the grid view in Project
Applies ToProject for the web Project Online

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Microsoft 365 screen reader support content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Project for the web with your keyboard and a screen reader to open the grid view and work with tasks in that view. We have tested it with Narrator in Microsoft Edge, but it might work with other screen readers and web browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • To learn more about screen readers, go to How screen readers work with Microsoft 365.

  • When you use Project for the web, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge as your web browser. Because Project for the web runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in the desktop program. For example, you’ll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not Project for the web.

Add tasks and edit task details

You can add tasks, assign tasks to resources, add a duration to a task, and indent tasks under summary tasks in the grid view.

  1. In Project Home, navigate to the project you want to work with, and press Enter to open it. The focus moves to the grid view. To learn how to navigate Project Home, refer to Use a screen reader to explore and navigate Project. To learn how to create a new project in Project Home, refer to Use a screen reader to create a new project in Project.

  2. When you hear "Loading complete," press the Tab key until you hear: “Selected, Grid tab item.” If you hear "Not selected" instead, press Enter to open the Grid tab.

  3. To add a task, do one of the following:

    • If you are creating a new project, press the Tab key until you hear “Add new task, name,” and then type a name for the task.

    • If you are adding more tasks to an existing project, press the Tab key until you hear the name of the first task, press the Down arrow key until you hear “Add new task, name,” and then type a name for the task.

  4. To add a duration to the task, press the Tab key. You hear: “Add new task, duration.” Type the number of days the task is estimated to take. You can enter times that are shorter than one day too, for example, 0.5.

  5. To assign a resource to the task, press Shift+Tab to return to the Name column, and then press Alt+I to open the task details view. Press the Tab key until you hear "Add resource, not assigned," and then press Enter.

  6. Type a resource name in the Enter text to search field, or press the Tab key and then use the Down and Up arrow keys to find a resource in the team resources list. Press Enter to select a resource, and then press Esc to close the selection dialog box.

You cannot assign resources to a summary task. If a task has assigned resources when it is made a summary task (in step 8), the resources are removed.

  7. Press Shift+Tab until you hear "Close pane, button," and then press Enter to return the focus to the Grid tab.

  8. To indent the task under the previous task as a summary task, press Alt+M to open the More options menu, press the Down arrow key until you hear "Make subtask, menu item," and then press Enter. The selected task becomes a subtask and the task above it becomes a summary task.

  9. To add more tasks, repeat steps 3 to 8.

To learn how to add dependencies between tasks in the timeline view, refer to Use a screen reader to work with the timeline view in Project.
