Applies ToMicrosoft Forms Microsoft Forms Pro

This article is for people who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Windows tools or features and Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Accessibility help & learning content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Microsoft Forms with your keyboard and a screen reader to respond to questions in a form or quiz. We have tested it with Narrator in Microsoft Edge and JAWS and NVDA in Chrome, but it might work with other screen readers and web browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Notes:

Respond to questions in a form or quiz

  1. Microsoft Forms forms and quizzes are shared with respondents in the form of a web link. To start responding, open the link.

  2. To browse the questions within the form or quiz, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab. For each question, you hear the number of the question, its title, and question type. For mandatory questions you also hear: "Required to answer." For questions that allow you to select only one answer option, you hear: "Single choice." For questions that allow you to select multiple answer options, you hear: "Multiple choice."

  3. When you're on the question you want to respond to, do one of the following depending on the question type:

Note: With Narrator, switch off the scan mode with choice, rating, Likert, and Net Promoter Score questions.

    • In single choice questions, to navigate to and select the option you want, press the Down arrow key until you hear the option, followed by "Radio button." The option is selected. In multiple choice questions, to navigate to the option you want, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab until you hear the option, followed by "Checkbox, unchecked," and then press Spacebar to select. Repeat for each option you want to select.

    • For single and multiline text questions, type your answer in the text field.

    • For rating questions, press the Right or Left arrow key until you hear the rating you want.

    • For date questions, enter the date you want in the MM/DD/YYYY format.

    • For ranking questions, use the Tab key or Shift+Tab to navigate between the items in the ranking list. You hear the name of the item, followed by "Move option up, move option down," and the current ranking of the item. To move an item up in the ranking, press the Tab key until you hear "Move option up," and then press Enter. To move an item down in the ranking, press the Tab key until you hear "Move option down," and then press Enter.

    • For Likert scale questions, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab to browse the statements. For each statement, use the Right and Left arrow keys to navigate to the response you want.

    • For file upload questions, press the Tab key until you hear "Upload a file," and then press Enter. The Windows Open dialog box opens. Navigate to the file you want to upload, and then press Enter.

    • For Net Promoter Score questions, use the Up and Down arrow keys to navigate to the value you want.

  4. To move to the next question, press the Tab key until you hear the question. Respond to the question as instructed above.

  5. When you are ready to submit your responses, press the Tab key until you hear "Submit," and then press Enter.
