The Bibliography field displays an alphabetized list of sources that are associated with your document. The list of sources is formatted according to the bibliography style that you selected on the References tab.

Note: If there are no sources associated with your document — that is, if there are no Citation field codes in the document — the field results of the Bibliography field code displays the message, There are no sources in the current document. For information about the Citation field code, see Field codes: Citation field.

An easy way to insert a Bibliography field code into your document is to use the Bibliography command. When you use this command, Word places the Bibliography field code in your document.

  1. Click where you want to insert the bibliography.

  2. On the References tab, click Bibliography.

  3. Click a preformatted bibliography design to insert the bibliography into the document.

Note: If you add or remove citations after you add the Bibliography field code to your document, click the Bibliography field code, and then press F9 to update the field results.

Syntax

When you view the Bibliography field code in your document, the syntax looks like this:

{ BIBLIOGRAPHY [Optional switches] }

Note: A field code tells the field what to show. Field results are what is shown in the document after having evaluated the field code. To toggle between viewing the field code and the field code results, press Alt+F9.

Optional switches

\l locale ID

Determines the language in which to display the sources in the bibliography. When Default is selected in the Language list in the Create Source or Edit Source dialog boxes, you can use the \l switch and the locale ID to display the bibliography items in the language that you specify.

Note: The \l switch appears only when you insert the BIBLIOGRAPHY field code by clicking the Insert Bibliography command, not by clicking one of the preformatted bibliography entries in the gallery of bibliographies, after you click Bibliography in the Citations & Bibliography group on the References tab.

\f locale ID

Filters the bibliography based on the locale ID. Only sources with a language setting of Default or a setting that matches the locale ID are included in the bibliography. For example, the field code { BIBLIOGRAPHY \f 1041 } results in a bibliography that lists only those sources where Default or Japanese is selected in the Language list in the New Source or Edit Source dialog boxes.

Example

The field code { BIBLIOGRAPHY \l 2058} results in a bibliography that displays the list of sources so that it is suitable for a paper written for a Mexican publication, and the field code { BIBLIOGRAPHY \l 2055} displays the same list of sources so that it is suitable for a paper written for a Swiss publication. The language setting for each of the sources is Default, and the bibliography style is APA.
