ISSUE

Outlook crashes in OLMAPI32!CopyProps function when using integrated applications or add-ins that process emails.

A similar crash event will appear in the Windows Event Viewer Application Log:

Faulting application name: OUTLOOK.EXE, version: 16.0.13001.20266, time stamp: 0x5ef2a169 Faulting module name: OLMAPI32.DLL, version: 16.0.13001.20266, time stamp: 0x5ef23d9b Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000001efec6 Faulting process id: 0x1d10

Cause:

A new property type (PT_MV_I8) appeared in Exchange Online starting 06/30/2020 which causes IMessage->CopyTo to crash.

An example of this new property:

Tag: 0x86961014 Type: PT_MV_I8 DASL: http://schemas.microsoft.com/mapi/string/{F68DE012-ECEF-4E8E-BEB5-D1DE5B08E2AE}/KeyPhraseScores Named Prop Name: sz: "KeyPhraseScores" Named Prop Guid: {F68DE012-ECEF-4E8E-BEB5-D1DE5B08E2AE} = Unknown

STATUS: FIXED

On July 7, 2020 the Exchange Online Service Team turned off the feature that was generating the property type (PT_MV_I8) that was causing the crash.  This will help mitigate the issue for new emails.  Emails that were sent between 6/30/20 and 7/7/20 may still have the property and cause the crash.

On patch Tuesday, August 11, 2020, Outlook client fixes were released to all Microsoft 365 channels and perpetual MSI versions.  To see the Microsoft 365 builds for August 11th please see the Update History page.  For the perpetual versions, the public update KBs are linked from this KB article.
