The IncludePicture field inserts the graphic specified in the field code.

To insert an IncludePicture field, click the Insert tab, click Insert Picture from File, click the picture file that you want to insert, click the arrow next to the Insert button, and then click Link to File.

The IncludePicture field replaces the Import field used in earlier versions of Microsoft Word. If you open a document that contains Import fields, they remain in the document and function correctly.

Security Note: Because field codes can be visible to anyone reading your document, be sure that the information you place in field codes is not information that you want kept private.

Syntax

When you view the IncludePicture field code in your document, the syntax looks like this:

{ INCLUDEPICTURE "FileName" [Switches ] }

Note: A field code tells the field what to show. Field results are what is shown in the document after having evaluated the field code. To toggle between viewing the field code and the field code results, press Alt+F9.

Instructions

"FileName"

The name and location of the graphics file. If the location includes a long file name with spaces, enclose it in quotation marks. Replace single backslashes with double backslashes to specify the path, for example:

"C:\\Manual\\Art\\Art 22.gif"

Switches

\c Converter

Identifies the graphics filter you want to use. Use the file name of the graphics filter without the .flt file name extension; for example, type pictim32 for the Pictim32.flt filter.

\d

Reduces the file size by not storing graphics data with the document.

Notes:

  • If you double-click a graphic inserted by the IncludePicture field, Word displays the Picture Tools Format tab on the ribbon. To change the graphic without using the drawing tools in Word, edit the graphic in the application it was created in, and then update the field in Word.

  • If Word doesn't recognize the format of a graphics file, check the Files of type box in the Insert Picture dialog box (on the Insert tab, click Insert Picture from File). This list reflects the graphics filters installed on your system.
