You can see the version history of a modern page or news post and compare versions in SharePoint, including comparing changes visually on the page. You can see when a page was changed and who changed it. You can also see when properties (information about the file) were changed. If you need to, you can restore a previous version or delete a previous version.

Comparing page versions

Note: Some functionality is introduced gradually to organizations that have opted in to the Targeted Release program. This means that you may not yet see this feature or it may look different than what is described in the help articles.

View version history

  1. Go to the page or news post that you want to see a version history for.

  2. At the top of the page, select Page details and then at the bottom of the Page details panel, select Version history.

  3. The Version history pane will display, and you'll see a list of published and saved draft versions.

Note: Published versions are considered "major versions" and version numbers always end in a 0 (for example, the first major version would be v1.0) . Saved drafts are considered "minor versions" and end in the number of the draft saved after the last major version (for example, v1.1). A page or news post must be manually saved as a draft (not autosaved) to count as a minor version.

  4. To compare changes between a version and its previous version, select the version you want to compare. You'll see a list of changes made between that version and the previous version.

To compare changes in non-sequential versions, select a version you want to compare. Then, next to the version you want to compare it to, select the ellipses (...) next to the version and select Compare with selected version.

See a visual comparison of differences between versions on the page

You can see differences highlighted right on a page. Web parts that have had changes made will be surrounded by a colored border which corresponds to the type and description of the change in the version history pane.

Here's an example of what you'll see:
